Commonwealth X Adidas "RESPONSE" Featuring Alexander P.

Our team members have become family through the years, and despite everything going on in the world, they help push us forward every day. For the launch of our Commonwealth x adidas Consortium collaboration, we’ll be checking in with our team members from Commonwealth flagship stores around the globe.  We ask them how they’re doing and what their “RESPONSE” has been to everything going on in their local communities. Name:  Alexander P.Flagship:  Commonwealth LA Since:  2017 Hey Alex, peace! How are you?Great, I’ve never been better, surprisingly.  With everything that has been happening in 2020, what was something that motivated or demanded a response from you?I’ve always been somewhat conscious of our social climate and how people of color have been mistreated. I’ve been mistreated. But the wall being built on the boarders of Mexico and Black Lives Matter movement, are the two moments I can point to. Innocent children being stolen from their families. Parents who are simply seeking opportunities to provide a better life.  Black men and women, murdered in cold blood by the hand (or the guns) of incompetent police officers. Watching the murders of innocent people without repercussion sent me over the top. My blood boiled, punishments continue to not fit the crimes. Murders waking free! The ugly underbelly of our country showed itself, spear headed by one of the most self centered and egotistical United States Presidents we have ever seen. Nevertheless, those two moments are the thorns in my side. ( I don’t mean to downplay the Severity of Covid-19 either. I understand that it has impacted millions of people across the globe, including people in my own family.)  Do you feel like all this time at home has given you and your peers more time to actually put time into what they are passionate about?Absolutely. This time, although very trying financially & emotionally for most people, has forced us to become creative. Many of my peers, myself included, are taking leaps of faith and investing in ourselves. From creativity, hobbies, to self-care and more. Even in our regular everyday lives many people are finding different ways to get creative. Parents, kids, business owners, artist, you name it.  This pandemic has given me plenty of space and time as an artist to work on my brand freely.  It has allowed me to ultimately see what I want from the brand and myself. Oddly enough, it nudged me to also plan more, work ahead and become more proactive. We are building what we believe to be the right habits, laying down a stronger foundation, creating relevant content. I am extremely grateful that I’ve been able to capitalize on the extra free time and also help give back to the youth in the process.  This time has given many of us a glimpse of what it actually takes to reach our goals. Most people over think and wait for “the perfect time”.  The truth is, there is no better time, than the present. I believe that time is our most valuable asset. I am extremely excited to continue to see what my peers and strangers alike create. Struggle breeds greatness.  Positivity is important for you. How have you kept this spirit alive in a time like this?Positivity is something you must own, it’s a mindset. It’s a part of self love, you have to work towards it everyday. Where there is darkness there is light. I have leaned heavily on my creativity and thirst for discovery. I find pleasure in things such as books, new movies, interviews etc. Family and running, have also been a great escape for me. I always pin family and running together, because I feel like that is food for the heart and soul. Love and exercise.  I’ve also placed more attention on the things I value. Walking my dog, listening to new music, exploring new wine, conversations with friends and family. I used to take these things for granted. It’s usually things you don’t stop to think about. For most of us, the things We’ve over looked have been taken away, essentially. Traveling, the gym, eating inside of a restaurant. Its changed my perspective. We do not need much to be happy, we over indulge. Granted, We have never experienced a time like the one we are living in today. With so much negativity on the news, on our feeds, politically etc. It is not an easy pill to swallow. But for me, to keep my head above water, the glass must stay half full. Keep things simple, love each other and choose happiness.  What’s one thing that you’ve learned during this time that you’d like to pass on to our community? We are only as strong as our weakest link. We still have so much to learn, so be a sponge. Knowledge is meant to be shared, knowledge is nothing without application! There is strength in numbers, in our women, our children and in our communities. The youth is our energy! It is so motivational to see our community grow, to see people standing together for our brothers and sisters. We are the living proof.  I’ve been fighting this war against racism for over ten years. My first March was for Treyvon Martin in downtown Orlando, 2012. Yet, the issues in our communities continue, it is simply heartbreaking. More and more people who look like me, think like me, grew up like me, are standing together in the face of rascim, oppression and inequalities. Those people give me strength, they give me hope. I probably won’t be alive to see the end of this fight, but if can all contribute in some way that  will speaks volumes. As a community we must stay united, we are beautiful, we are strong and lastly we are worthy.  "What we do in life echoes in eternity." Name:  Lianna G.Flagship:  Commonwealth LA Since: 2019 Hey Lianna, peace! How are you?Yo! I’m doing well. Taking it day by day.  With everything that has been happening in 2020, what was something that motivated or demanded a response from you?I’ve wanted to pursue music for as long as I can remember. One of my new year's resolutions was to work with more people in 2020 than I ever have before. But once quarantine hit I quickly realized that wasn’t going to happen. I got creative with my WFH set-up and turned the corner of my kitchen into a music studio. Music production has always piqued my interest but I never set aside the time to learn. This year, I got that extra time and invested a lot of it sitting behind my laptop.  What role has the pandemic played on your artistic output? The world on pause forced us all to reflect internally. How do we exist in this grey area between who we think we are and who we want to be? Journaling has helped me stay present and sort out a lot of my inner chaos. Self-assurance is something I still struggle with but creating on my own has forced me to trust my instincts and lean into the artistic choices I make. Overall, I’ve grown to value my own perspective enough to share it through my music.  How do you keep inspired during a time like this?I believe inspiration comes from seeking it and there are days where I don’t have the mental capacity to do so. But on days where I need it most, I turn to film. Luckily, we live in a time where sitting at home on a Friday night with Netflix is socially acceptable. I love falling deep into a story and the escapism that comes with it. I am able to separate my mind from any creative stress and channel that into new perspectives for my life and art.  What’s the one song you’ve had on during this time to keep your spirits up?It hasn’t been one song in particular. “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill” has been the most comforting and healing for me to listen to. “Ayo L, you know you got the lyrics...” The Commonwealth x adidas Consortium "RESPONSE” is now available at all Commonwealth locations and online at commonwealth-ftgg.ph. For the launch of our Commonwealth x adidas Consortium collaboration, we’ll be checking in with our team members from Commonwealth flagship stores around the globe.  We ask them how they’re doing and what their “RESPONSE” has been to everything going on in their local communities. Name: Bryan S.  Flagship: Commonwealth Manila Since: 2019 Hey Bryan, peace! How are you? I’m doing alright, hope everything’s good over there too. With everything that has been happening in 2020, what was something that motivated or demanded a response from you? Being physically and socially locked down, isolated while with things drastically changed, really made me reexamine everything in my life. I experienced a rediscovery of who I was and what I wanted to be doing. I felt that for the longest time, I was on autopilot and now I feel more myself through my art and the community around it. I had this kind of leap of faith in trusting in my art more.   What role has the pandemic played on your artistic output?  I remember the first thing that motivated me was standing up and using my art to protest against the messed up things that are happening, from police brutality to systemic oppression. Giving attention to these movements and highlighting communities that are helping out gave me the right kick to really get back to my art and using it as a medium to express myself and join the bigger conversation.  During the pandemic I’ve also found myself in service to small homegrown businesses. There’s this concept of bayanihan that’s being reflected in these times where a community has each other’s back, and I do as much as I can to take part in that through what I have. How do you keep inspired during a time like this? I’m inspired with the thought of never losing myself. I know that’s the main drive that keeps me going. Just being able to keep trusting that my craft can give me the light at the end of the tunnel. A major inspiration to me is just the people around me and the community I surround myself with. I think as people, we feed off of the energy around us and feeling unity over everything that is happening makes you feel that you are not alone in this. You’ve probably created a bunch of different art during this time. Is there one in particular that you’d like to share with the community? A particular piece of art I think I’d like to share are the clocks I made. I think those are also going to be sentimental to me just because I made it early on the lockdown and the pandemic, and I wanted for it to simply be a reminder of how valuable time is and how fast time goes. Honored to be a part of this campaign.  Really means a lot. Thank you guys! Name:  Omar L.Flagship:  Commonwealth DCSince:  2008 Hey Omar, peace! How are you?Peace, Everything is good. Taking it day by day.  With everything that has been happening in 2020, what was something that motivated or demanded a response from you?You know, I think this year has forced a lot of us to look at every aspect in our lives differently. When Covid-19 happened, it gave me a chance to sit down and have "me" time and do things like neighborhood walks, building legos, and shooting more pictures. Everything switched pretty drastically after the black lives matter movement started to really gain momentum. I'm not someone that really follows politics because it never felt like it was something designed to benefit me in my everyday life anyways, but it felt like this moment really forced people like myself with that thought process to look at everything again and actually dive deeper into why society is the way that it is. I found myself going to protests which led to documenting these moments that felt important. What’s something new that you’ve discovered about your local neighborhood at this time?Almost all of our neighbors are small businesses and we've always looked out for each but Covid and the social justice movement really made us come together. How have you kept your spirits up during this time?Checking in on friends, Face timing family and just and just having more "Me" time. What are some of the local businesses you’d like to shoutout and share with our community? All of my pictures were taken close to the shop at places I frequent all the time. "Shibuya Eatery" is really good food in Adams Morgan. Try the potato salad! "Eddies Hair Creation" everyone goes to Eddies to get a cut. "Joint Custody" MY favorite record shop in DC. They have a really good selection of records and vintage tee's. For the launch of our Commonwealth x adidas Consortium collaboration, we’ll be checking in with our team members from Commonwealth flagship stores around the globe.  We ask them how they’re doing and what their “RESPONSE” has been to everything going on in their local communities. Name:  Eric W.          Flagship:  Commonwealth VA           Since:  2008 With everything that has been happening in 2020, what was something that motivated or demanded a response from you?  2020 has undoubtably been one of the wildest years ever. I think with all the loss that’s occurred this year I needed to take time and focus on things I could control like my health and well-being. Whether that be consuming a more plant based diet, exercising without being able to access the gym and walking/biking where possible. All of those things were a direct response to the circumstances presented to me. Do you feel like all this time at home has given you and your peers more time to actually put time into what they are passionate about?  Yes, but I think a lot of that came from the need to stay somewhat sane and survive the situation at hand. Personally it let me decide what I held most valuable with my time and cut the things out that weren’t. How have you kept inspired during this time?  By not wanting those days/weeks/months go by without feeling some sense of accomplishment. The ability to celebrate small daily goals kept me pushing on during the early days of things being shut down. If you had to share one recipe to the community, what would it be?Actually I have been working on some pretty good pizza recipes with some friends here in VA. We are planning a few pop ups (@lilza.pizzeria) over the next few months and we’ll see where that goes. Collaboration: Commonwealth X Adidas "RESPONSE" CL

Collaboration: Commonwealth X Adidas "RESPONSE" CL

Since 2004, Commonwealth has always been about building a community of like-minded individuals. Creating a space where ideas are exchanged, friendships are built, and stories begin. For the launch of our latest collaboration with adidas Consortium we wanted to highlight the voices in our communities that have helped shape our journey and those that continue to inspire us.     Over the next few weeks we’ll be checking in with Commonwealth team members from our flagships around the globe. Our team members have become family through the years, and despite everything going on in the world, they help push us forward every day.  Spread across Los Angeles, Washington D.C., Virginia Beach and Manila, we hear from @alexander_blaine @liannagutz, @egotthejazz, @omr.l, @jeromebaker3rd and @bryanchaiseng, and listen to their response to the year and their thoughts and actions taking place in their respective communities.   The sneaker itself is a revised look at the newly released Response CL silhouette. Commonwealth’s point of view to balance traditional and novelty, is showcased through it’s asymmetrical color blocking and a selected materials story. The lateral side of the shoe features minimalistic tints of warm white, while the medial side is expressed through a muted palette of earth tones. The Commonwealth x adidas Response features a mix of stitched down leather, molded suede panels, and hairy suede; as well as sonic welding, thermoplastic rubber and reflective details sitting on top of a 3-D spacer mesh. For Design Director Omar Quiambao, this project was about “trying to bring back a sense of discovery”. With today’s access to information, there leaves little room for discovery on the retail floor. We wanted that “discovery” to be the focus for our latest collaboration with adidas Consortium, hence the contrasting palettes between the lateral and medial sides of the sneaker. We sought to interpret the process in comparing it to stumbling onto an oasis in the vastness of the warm sands of the desert. Hybrid Theory: A History of Nike x sacai

Hybrid Theory: A History of Nike x sacai

Leading up to the launch of the highly anticipated Nike sneakers x sacai VaporWaffle, we take a look at the relationship between the Japan-based high fashion label and the American athletic supergiant. While many have come to know of the partnership through their hit double-edged mashup of  two late-'70s Nike silhouettes, the LDV and Waffle Racer, at SS19 Paris Fashion Week more than two years ago, their collaboration began a few years back. Chitose Abe, founder of sacai, launched her career as a patternmaker for COMME des GARÇONS, working with the likes of Rei Kawakubo and Junya Watanabe until founding her own label in 1998.  Nike had already worked with COMME des GARÇONS on a number of shoes and in 2015, the Swoosh had teamed up with Chitose Abe and a now-established sacai on a NikeLab collaboration. The first venture between Abe and the Oregon based sportswear giant saw sacai remix a classic silhouette and redesign athletic staples, including a slip-on Air Max 90 alongside track jackets, sweatsuits and running gear. Abe created pieces that used lace, fishnet fabric and frill details, using what came to be known as her signature style of ‘splicing’ different materials to create something bigger than the sum of its parts. What followed was what made rounds on the internet via the Parisian runway in June 2018. The LDWaffle is a clever hybrid of new and old, and was shown with an accompanying Blazer, both of which eventually dropped in May 2019, easily establishing itself as one of the most anticipated footwear releases that year.  The same technical precision complemented by a distinct creative vision carries on in the Nike sneakers x sacai VaporWaffle. Combining the innovative Vaporfly with the classic Pegasus from 1983, the Nike x sacai VaporWaffle doubles up on the details, merging the past and future of Running, and further developing the harmony of the two label’s brand ethos into one unique silhouette.  The Nike x sacai VaporWaffle will be exclusively available via raffle at commonwealth-ftgg.ph. Look out for more details via our social media pages on the full mechanics.
