This week, we get in touch with Myles O’Meally, founder of Areté, a progressive product creation company focused on footwear design and engineering. We talk about his career path, beginning with his tenure in Nike as a Footwear Developer in various locations, to his recent work with Raf Simons and Areté. The following interview has been edited and condensed for clarity. Could you share a little bit about your background working for Nike in Amsterdam?  Towards the end of my Masters in 2013, I was fortunate enough to get a  job at Nike as a Footwear Developer. The job was with the Western Europe Product Creation (WEPC) team at the Nike European HQ in Hilversum, just outside of Amsterdam. The WEPC team was in charge of creating product for the Western Europe market. We did not create new product but re-created existing models using materials, color and graphic plays specifically for the Western Europe key accounts. We worked on city packs as well as in-store specials for accounts like JD, Footlocker and Size?.      What was it like moving to Vietnam as part of your job with Nike? What are some of the things you learned working in a different country? The funny thing about the Vietnam opportunity is that it only came about because the WEPC team was being closed down. At that time, Nike was shutting all of it’s regional project creation centers and centralizing everything to Portland. This was in 2015.  While in Vietnam I only worked on new product: creating new soles and new uppers only. I was in the factories every day for three years, so I was exposed to a lot of technical learning and a lot of different kind of product on a daily basis. This is where I really felt my knowledge on creating footwear grew. You’re working in the factory every day so you really start to understand the business side of the industry. You’re seeing the numbers, the quantity of products created, the cost of raw materials, how to scale, and even opportunities to integrate more sustainable practices. I really learned the full process of product creation and to truly value the amazingly talented and skilled people who work within these factories doing some incredible work. It was a very eye opening experience. What made you decide to move forward and pursue working on your own company?  During my last year at Nike, I was really trying to find a role within the company where I could utilize my multiple interests and skills. The skill set I learned during my time at Ho Chi Minh was very niche. I was also keen to move back to Europe. Most of my options were in Portland or in Asia again, so I decided the only way I could achieve this was if I set it up myself.  This also coincided with the shifting of the sporting goods industry and the luxury good/fashion industry; the two industries were drawing closer and closer together. The sneaker industry in particular was booming as fashion brands were collaborating with sporting brands on a higher and more frequent level. However I saw that when many of these brands tried to make sports inspired footwear by themselves they often struggled. Making footwear is very technical and has many challenges and barriers. I saw an opportunity there. I left Nike at the end of 2018. How would you describe your current venture, Areté? How different is it from your past projects? I started Areté in July 2019. It is a progressive product creation company focused on the creation of footwear. I set the company up to help remove some of the barriers existing in the footwear industry. I wanted to build an organization capable of creating footwear programs for existing fashion brands at the same level and using the same technical knowledge as existing footwear brands. The structure of the organization is actually not much different to a Nike sneakers product creation team. We currently have one designer, Nathan Alexander-Walker, and was due to hire a second before Covid-19 hit. I have a production partner based in Hong Kong and the Areté team works with the brand and my production partners team. The major difference is that I get to use my multiple interests on a daily basis and working with different brands provides different challenges and a wide range of different design practices. I naturally have a lot more to do now but I also have a lot more freedom in my work which I thoroughly enjoy.    We saw your work for Raf Simons AW20. Could you describe to us your work with Raf Simons? Was he someone you've always wanted to work with? The way he creates concepts and envisions ideas is truly unique, the areas he draws his references from are completely different to anything I’ve experienced before. It’s an amazing process working with him and his team on creating product. The incredible work ethic they have is infectious and I enjoy the process of applying his concepts and ideas through my more technical thinking. It shows you the level you need to be at and the work you need to put in to be successful.  How can someone move into a career in footwear design and engineering? Do you have any tips that you can share?   I would say the best way is to begin with studying product, whether it be Industrial Design, Engineering Design, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture, Product Design etc. Give yourself a solid foundation. Don’t restrict yourself to only footwear when studying and learning; the principles of design and engineering are the same regardless of the product and what you learn in studying one product/field can be easily transferred across on to another product/field with great effect. Practice in your own time and grow a portfolio with great variation. I almost feel like it is even more competitive now, through the use of social media everyone can get their work out there so easily. You need to stand out, and showing a variety of skills and interest within the design and engineering fields will help with that.

After I work on my editorial work, I do copy for advertising agencies.What’s one thing you always keep on your desk and why?My notebook, it's where I write down my daily to-do lists (because apps don't seem to work for me) and keep track of meeting notes. What makes an ideal creative space at home?While it gets really lonely not being able to have face-to-face interactions with colleagues during stressful moments in the day, I feel like having a pet around really helps. What time of the day are you most inspired, and why?It's usually during the wee hours and I think it's because of the quiet. As much as I've tried to adjust to being a morning person, this is really the time ideas come to me. It's a constant reminder that there are other things I can still preoccupy myself with apart from work. Right now I'm switching between Factfulness by Hans Rosling, Anna Rosling Rönnlund, Ola Rosling and A Velocity of Being: Letters to A Young Reader by Maria Popova. When I have to be on the grind, it's coffee, which I don't have because of slight apathy to go out and get some. What makes an ideal creative space at home?An ideal work-from-home setup is one that has: High-speed internet access (which I regrettably don’t have) Natural lighting A clock to make sure you don’t lose track of time Bed that is far away from your desk Mine is a “home office” that’s not up to par for maximum efficiency because of the cozy condition. Moving around from my WFH desk to the dining table, and then to the living room helps with my productivity.What time of the day are you most inspired, and why?Dusk to night. I am a visual artist and producer working on a solo music release and a zine. What’s one thing you always keep on your desk and why? A glass of water, because the heat index reports reminded me. What makes an ideal creative space at home?Working on having a good mental space has been more important to me than a physical area, especially while a lot of my belongings are still in transit. Having simple practices to mark the start and end of “work” and “personal” time has helped me get into a flow. (I like to journal and make myself tea.)  What time of the day are you most inspired, and why? I’ve tried to be the type of person who wakes up and sleeps early, but I can hear myself think better after midnight. Watching the sun rise is an added bonus. Koji Arboleda — Freelance Photographer Can you share a little bit about yourself and what you’re currently working on?I’m a full-time freelance photographer. I mainly focus on shooting fashion, portraits, and objects. To be honest, there’s not much work for us freelancers right now. I’m currently editing what I’ve shot before the quarantine, including the cover for Preview. Aside from that, I’ve been working on myself. I had big plans for 2020 but because of the pandemic I postponed it for next year, and i’m currently just preparing by researching and fixing requirements.  What’s one thing you always keep on your desk and why? Water. I always keep myself hydrated when working. I dunno, it’s like a break to keep myself calm and focused. What makes an ideal creative space at home?A good seat. I like working close to the ground where I can easily fix my posture and legs to keep myself comfortable from hours of editing. What time of the day are you most inspired, and why?I’ve always been a morning person. I like editing early in the morning, so by lunch or early afternoon I can chill and relax.

Transit Records is a Manila-based internet label, positioning itself as something “between a DJ collective and events production concept.” Recently, they've been experimenting with the concept of "Pirate Radio” through live streamed music sessions performed by members of their collective, quickly adapting to the new digital landscape. We catch up with Sean Bautista, creative director of Transit, in an email interview about their creative process in the confines of home. The team is fortunate enough to use isolation as an opportunity to take a step back, recalibrate and focus on adjusting to the reality of life in quarantine. We’re keeping ourselves busy and creative, to the best of our capacity, through a proactive mindset.  What was your process into creating your work-from-home setup?We had to make do with what little that we have at home. While it's easy to obsess over the best gear and club-standard equipment; we figured that music, curation and our point-of-view were more important. We made sure to hit the ground running by working with what hardware we had, researching accessible broadcasting softwares, and sending each other gear through local couriers.  Do you have desk essentials you can’t work without? Apart from my phone and laptop, a glass of cold brew has been a desk side staple. The drink cognitively positions me in a headspace ready for a day of work and the caffeine also gives me the additional push to power through laziness.  I also have my monitor headphones on while working on everything from designing flyers to attending to emails. Keeping an ear on a stream of Online Stations, Spotify Playlists and Soundcloud Podcasts has helped me dig for new music and broaden my sonic vocabulary. One of the other things that I always keep on hand is a daily planner. Concretizing goals and listing tasks on paper is a tool I use to organize my priorities in a tactile manner. What’s your key to staying productive? How do you get shit done these days?Touching base with the team, on a regular basis, has been really helpful. Delegating responsibilities and establishing accountability has ensured that we achieve progress with our ongoing projects. It’s easy to get lost in passivity when you’re relying solely on self dependence. Checking in has kept us not only on the same wavelength but answerable to one another. What's your daily routine like recently?Cutting down on travel time and workplace banter has allowed me to focus on life outside of work. If I’m not on my afternoon Google Meet or churning out assets for digital, I’m finding more pockets of time to work on my physical and mental wellbeing. I haven’t had the opportunity to read, meditate and workout, at this capacity, in a very long time.  How do you transition from rest to work at home? Do you have any rituals before or after you work?Days always start with meditation and a cup of coffee. I keep the day relatively loose with blocks of work and pockets of leisure in between. As long as I check off the things in my list, I freely move things around based on how I feel. The work day usually ends with me preparing dinner for myself, hoping on a call with my parents or girlfriend, and listing down objectives for the following day.  How was the pivot from IRL events to live streaming? How did you arrive at a setup you’re comfortable with?Unfortunately, we had to cancel all our activations, even corporate partnerships, because of the COVID-19 outbreak. It was definitely disheartening to find out that a big part of our week to week was being taken away; but I wouldn’t say that it was too challenging to pivot to the online space. Working in a small team allows us to correspond and mobilize ideas rather quickly. Live-streaming felt like an intuitive contingency plan. Having partners that are proficient in operations also helped us seamlessly transpose our programs, from the physical space, to behind the screen.  Could you tell us a little bit about the playlist you made?The team has been spending a lot of time in an app called JQBX — it's a virtual listening room that allows a group to queue and listen to songs in real time. This has enabled us to share tracks within our roster of DJs and discover new music with our extended community of non-DJs.  For this playlist, we hopped on a JQBX session to work off each other’s library while keeping Commonwealth’s energy in mind.
